BACKGROUND: The bidirectional relationship between periodontitis and type 2 diabetes (T2D) underscores the need for adjunctive therapies to enhance nonsurgical periodontal therapy (NSPT). This meta-analysis evaluates the efficacy of antioxidants in improving periodontal and glycemic outcomes in T2D patients with periodontitis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted using PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar, covering publications from 2015 to 2025. Antioxidants tested were melatonin, propolis, lycopene, ginger, vitamin C, omega-3 fatty acids (O3FAs), and grape seed extract. Outcomes (clinical attachment level [CAL], probing depth [PD], gingival index [GI], HbA1c) were analyzed using random-effects models (mean differences, 95% CIs). Risk of bias was assessed via the Cochrane criteria. RESULTS: Eight randomized controlled trials (RCTs, n = 315) were identified. Adjunctive antioxidants significantly improved CAL (melatonin: SMD -2.28, 95% CI -3.01 to -1.56; propolis: SMD -3.83, -4.79 to -2.87) and PD (melatonin: SMD -2.40, -3.14 to -1.66; propolis: SMD -1.78, -2.44 to -1.11). Melatonin and propolis also reduced HbA1c (melatonin: SMD -2.28; propolis: SMD -3.83). Lycopene and ginger showed modest effects, while vitamin C and O3FAs had minimal impact. Evidence certainty was moderate for CAL/HbA1c and low for PD/GI. CONCLUSION: Antioxidants, particularly melatonin and propolis, enhance periodontal and glycemic outcomes in T2D-periodontitis patients. Despite promising results, limitations include small sample sizes and heterogeneity. Larger RCTs are needed to optimize protocols. © 2025 The Author(s). INTRODUCTION: The current meta-analysis aimed to determine the efficacy of propolis supplementation on hypertension. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: the systematic review and meta-analysis were undertaken on five online databases to find clinical trials assessing the effects of propolis on systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) markers up to October 2023. The pooled estimation of the weighted mean difference (WMD) and the corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated using a fixed-effect model. Egger's regression test was used to assess publication bias. EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS: A significant decrease was observed in SBP levels following propolis supplementation (WMD=-5.58 mmHg, 95% CI: -7.74, -3.42; I2=42.99%, P=0.08). However, no significant change was found in the levels of DBP (WMD=-1.34 mmHg, 95% CI: -6.10, 3.41; I2=75.94%, P<0.01). Moreover, studies with an experimental design (-5.53, 95% CI: -13.24, 2.18) and trials with <30 individuals (-3.96, 95% CI: -7.98, 0.06) did not demonstrate a significant impact of propolis on SBP levels. In trials with an experimental design, a substantial decrease in DBP levels was seen in subgroup analyses after propolis supplementation (-9.29, 95% CI: -12.50, -6.08). CONCLUSIONS: The results of the study revealed the positive effects of propolis supplementation in the context of hypertension, as evidenced by a reduction in SBP levels.

Recent interventional investigations suggest the beneficial impact of propolis supplementation on inflammatory biomarkers; however, the results have not been summarized in a comprehensive meta-analysis. We conducted this meta-analysis to summarize all available data and provide clear evidence for whether propolis supplementation affects inflammatory biomarkers. This systematic review with meta-analysis was performed by searching databases (PubMed/Medline, Web of Science, Scopus, and Embase) until February 2024. It included randomized clinical trials (RCTs) assessing the effects of propolis supplementation on inflammatory biomarkers in adults. This review included 20 RCTs with a total of 1139 participants. The propolis supplementation significantly reduced IL-6 (WMD = -2.48; 95 % CI: -4.62, -0.34; P = 0.023) and TNF-α (WMD = -0.86; 95 % CI: -1.45, -0.26; P = 0.005) compared with control groups. Although the CRP concentration was not reduced (WMD = 0.01; 95 % CI: -0.03, 0.05, P = 0.646), a significant reduction in CRP levels was revealed in supplementation durations ≥ 10 weeks. These results suggest that propolis has a beneficial effect on TNF-α and IL-6 levels and may be an effective adjunctive therapy for diseases where inflammation is a key factor in the etiology. Due to the limited number of studies, clinical diversity, and other limitations, it is necessary to conduct more high-quality studies to provide more precise and comprehensive recommendations.

BACKGROUND: New evidence suggested that propolis might reduce serum levels of inflammatory mediators; therefore, in this study we aimed to prove the potential effect of propolis on serum levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6), C-reactive protein (CRP), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) through conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS: Databases including PubMed, ClinicalTrials.gov, Scopus, Cochrane Library, and ISI Web of Science were searched until October 2023. In the present meta-analysis, we detected the overall effect sizes using extracted standard mean differences (SMD) and the standard deviations (SDs) from both study groups through DerSimonian and Laird method. Exploring the statistical heterogeneity was done through Cochran's Q test and I-squared statistic. RESULTS: In total, seventeen and sixteen studies were included in the systematic review and meta-analysis, respectively. The overall estimate indicated that the propolis significantly reduced serum levels of IL-6 (SMD = -3.47, 95% confidence interval (95%CI): -5.1, -1.84; p < 0.001), CRP (SMD= -1.73, 95%CI: -2.82, -0.65; p = 0.002), and TNF-α (SMD= -1.42, 95%CI= -2.15, -0.68; p < 0.001). These results also revealed geographical region and propolis dose were the critical points to get the beneficial effects. CONCLUSION: According to our result, propolis supplementation can decrease serum levels of IL-6, CRP, and TNF-α; therefore, it might be considered as complementary therapy for the treatment of certain chronic diseases. © 2024. PURPOSE: Even though various randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have assessed the effect of propolis on glycemic indices and liver enzyme concentrations in adults, results have been inconsistent, without conclusive evidence. This systematic review and meta-analysis of RCTs sought to evaluate the effects of propolis consumption on glycemic indices and liver enzymes, fasting blood glucose, insulin, homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance, glycosylated hemoglobin, alanine transaminase, aspartate aminotransferase, and gamma-glutamyl transferase in adults. METHODS: Two independent researchers systematically searched PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library for English-language RCTs published up to April 2024. The results were generated through a random-effects model and presented as the weighted mean difference (WMD) with a 95% CI. The Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool for RCTs and Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation assessment were used to evaluate quality assessment and certainty of evidence. FINDINGS: A total of 21 RCTs were included. A pooled analysis of 24 trials reported that propolis consumption led to a significant reduction in fasting blood glucose (WMD, -9.75 mg/dL; 95% CI, -16.14 to -3.35), insulin (WMD, -1.64 µU/mL; 95% CI, -2.61 to -0.68), glycosylated hemoglobin (WMD, -0.46%; 95% CI, -0.71 to -0.21), homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (WMD, -0.54; 95% CI, -0.98 to -0.09), alanine transaminase (WMD, -2.60 IU/L; 95% CI, -4.58 to -0.61), and aspartate aminotransferase (WMD, -2.07 IU/L; 95% CI, -3.05 to -1.09). However, there were no significant effects on gamma-glutamyl transferase in comparison with the control group. IMPLICATIONS: This meta-analysis has shown that propolis supplementation may have beneficial effects on glycemic indices and liver enzymes. Future high-quality, long-term RCTs are needed to confirm our results. CLINICALTRIALS: gov identifiers: CRD42024524763. (Clin Ther. 2024;46:XXX-XXX) © 2024 Elsevier HS Journals, Inc.

In the last few years, there has been a growing interest in the use of natural feed additives in animal feed. These can be used as replacements for antibiotics, to alter rumen fermentation and increase feed efficiency in ruminants. Therefore, the objective of this study is to evaluate the effects of adding different feed additives in the diet of beef and dairy cattle on their performance, dry matter intake (DMI) and feed efficiency, through a systematic review followed by meta-analysis. The systematic review suggested 43 peer-reviewed publications, according to the pre-established criteria. In beef cattle, the ionophore antibiotics reduced the DMI, improved the feed efficiency without interfering in the average daily gain (ADG). Non-ionophore antibiotics and propolis extract increased the ADG. In dairy cattle, the ionophores, yeast-based additives, and enzyme additives increased the feed efficiency, DMI, and daily milk production (MY), respectively. Essential oil supplementation in beef and dairy cattle had no effect on the feed intake and animal performance. The systematic review and meta-analysis allowed us to conclude that different feed additives have different effects on cattle performance, however, our results suggest that there are a few gaps regarding their effects on animal performance.

The present study aimed to assess the effect of propolis supplementation on oxidative status, a key contributor to the etiology of many chronic diseases. A systematic search of multiple databases, including Web of Science, SCOPUS, Embase, PubMed, and Google Scholar, was conducted from inception to October 2022 to identify articles examining the effect of propolis on glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GPX), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. The quality of the included studies was evaluated using the Cochrane Collaboration tool. A total of nine studies were included in the final analysis, and a random-effects model was used to pool the estimated effects. Results showed that propolis supplementation significantly increased the levels of GSH (SMD = 3.16; 95% CI: 1.15, 5.18; I2 = 97.2%), GPX (SMD = 0.56; 95% CI: 0.07, 1.05; p = 0.025; I2 = 62.3%), and TAC (SMD = 3.26; 95% CI: 0.89, 5.62; I2 = 97.8%, p < 0.001). However, the effect of propolis on SOD was not significant (SMD = 0.05; 95% CI: -0.25, 0.34; I2 = 0.0%). Although the MDA concentration was not significantly decreased overall (SMD = -0.85, 95% CI: -1.70, 0.09; I2 = 93.3%), a significant decrease in MDA levels was observed at doses ≥1000 mg/day (SMD = -1.90; 95% CI: -2.97, -0.82; I2 = 86.4) and supplementation durations of less than 11 weeks (SMD = -1.56; 95% CI: -2.60, -0.51; I2 = 90.4). These results suggest that propolis is a safe supplement with a beneficial effect on GSH, GPX, and TAC levels and may be an effective adjunctive therapy for diseases where oxidative stress is a key factor in the etiology. However, further high-quality studies are necessary to make more precise and comprehensive recommendations given the limited number of studies, clinical diversity, and other limitations. © 2023 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

Bee products including propolis, bee wax, pollen and royal jelly (RJ) have been used as medicine from ancient times. A vast number of in-vivo and in-vitro studies as well as clinical trials have been conducted to investigate potential health related properties of RJ. A growing number of clinical trials have been performed to assess effects of RJ ingestion on different metabolic markers including glycemia, with diverse results. In the current meataanalysis, we aimed to evaluate effects of RJ ingestion on glycemic markers compared with placebo and set directions for future research. Electronic databases including Scopus, Pubmed, Scholar, Cochrane, Proquest, SID and Magiran were searched and 5 eligible studies were included in the quantitative analysis. Review Manager Software was used for statistical analysis and random effects model was used for pooling data. A total of 205 participants for FPG and 130 participants for HbA1c were included. The overall analysis revealed that RJ consumption reduced FPG by 0.95 mg/dl (95% CI: -5.83 to 3.87; p = 0.69; I2 = 0%; Tau2 = 0.00) and HbA1c by 0.32 (95% CI: -0.87 to 0.23; p = 0.25; I2 = 69 %; Tau2 = 0.16) which were not statistically significant. Funnel plot demonstrated no publication bias. In conclusion, RJ supplementation did not beneficially affect markers of glycemia. However, due to methodology issues and potential confounders like diet as well as diverse populations, we recommend future studies well designed and well controlled for major confounders so we can update these data to more precise results and more accurate conclusion.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The impetus for the current study was to evaluate the efficacy of propolis supplementation on markers of glycemic status in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). METHODS: A comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and Google Scholar up to August 2018, identifying randomized controlled trials investigating the effect of propolis supplementation on glycemic markers in adults with T2DM. Cochrane Collaboration tool was used to evaluate the risk of bias assessment. A random-effects model was applied in the meta-analysis to compensate for potential heterogeneity among the included studies. RESULTS: Six randomized controlled trials comprising 373 participants were included in the systematic review and meta-analysis. The results of the meta-analysis revealed significant reductions in fasting plasma glucose (-13.51 mg/dl; 95% CI [-24.98, -2.04]) and hemoglobin A1C (-0.52%; 95% CI [-0.94, -0.10]) concentrations following propolis supplementation. However, no significant lowering effect was observed in fasting insulin levels (-0.53 pmol/L; 95% CI [-1.69, 0.63]) or homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (-0.543; 95% CI [-1.72, 0.64]). CONCLUSION: This systematic review and meta-analysis suggested that propolis supplementation may be effective in controlling glycemic levels for T2DM patients. Further studies are needed to confirm these results. © 2019 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: This randomized controlled trial compared the effects of a barrier cream containing propolis, beeswax, queen bee larvae, and vegetable oil (barrier cream 1) with those of zinc oxide (barrier cream 2) and olive oil on the healing of mild diaper dermatitis (DD). METHODS: A single-blind, parallel-group, pretest-posttest, repeated-measures randomized controlled trial was conducted. The study included infants aged 1-6 months diagnosed with mild DD, who were recruited from three family health centers and a pediatric outpatient clinic in a public hospital in a district of the Mediterranean Region of Türkiye. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, one-way analysis of variance, chi-square, Bonferroni correction, and generalized estimating equations with multiple logistic regression. RESULTS: The mean DD severity score on days 1, 2, and 3 was lower in the barrier cream 1 group than in the barrier cream 2 and olive oil groups. The mean DD severity score on day 2 of the babies in the barrier cream 1 group was significantly lower than in the other groups (p = .012). Compared to olive oil, barrier cream 1 was 2.54 times (p = .004) more effective, and barrier cream 2 was 1.43 times more effective (p = .192) in improving DD. CONCLUSIONS: Barrier cream 1, a formulation containing propolis, beeswax, queen bee larvae, and vegetable oil, demonstrated superior effectiveness in treating mild DD in infants compared to barrier cream 2 and olive oil. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: Interventions aligned with the ABCDE model positively influenced healing outcomes and enhanced parental satisfaction.
