The purpose of this meta-analysis is to explore whether the supplement of sea buckthorn affects the factors related to metabolic syndrome. The related RCTs from five databases were systematically searched and comprehensively random effects model was used to calculate SMD and 95% CI. The Cochrane deviation risk tool was used to evaluate the deviation risk. Fifteen studies were involved in the meta-analysis. First, sea buckthorn supplementation reduced triglycerides [-0.722 (-1.129, -0.316); p < .001], total cholesterol [-0.345 (-0.639, -0.051); p = .021], low density lipoprotein cholesterol [-0.396 (-0.755, -0.037); p = .031], and increased high density lipoprotein cholesterol [0.370 (0.056, 0.684); p = .021] in overall subjects. Second, subgroup analysis showed that sea buckthorn supplementation reduced lipids only in people with abnormal lipid metabolism. Third, sea buckthorn had no effect on blood sugar, blood pressure, and BMI of the overall subjects. Sea buckthorn may affect the lipid metabolism in circulation, but it cannot affect blood glucose, blood pressure, and BMI. These indicators are closely associated with metabolic syndrome. This study may contribute to the development and utilization of sea buckthorn, and may provide a new and safer way for the prevention and treatment of metabolic syndrome. The limitation of this study is high heterogeneity, even if subgroup analysis is used. However, more clinical studies are needed to determine the real effect of sea buckthorn on metabolic syndrome. © 2022 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

BACKGROUND: Many people with atopic eczema are reluctant to use the most commonly recommended treatments because they fear the long-term health effects. As a result, many turn to dietary supplements as a possible treatment approach, often with the belief that some essential ingredient is 'missing' in their diet. Various supplements have been proposed, but it is unclear whether any of these interventions are effective. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate dietary supplements for treating established atopic eczema/dermatitis.Evening primrose oil, borage oil, and probiotics are covered in other Cochrane reviews. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the following databases up to July 2010: the Cochrane Skin Group Specialised Register, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) in The Cochrane Library, MEDLINE (from 2005), EMBASE (from 2007), PsycINFO (from 1806), AMED (from 1985), LILACS (from 1982), ISI Web of Science, GREAT (Global Resource of EczemA Trials) database, and reference lists of articles. We searched ongoing trials registers up to April 2011. SELECTION CRITERIA: Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) of dietary supplements for the treatment of those with established atopic eczema/dermatitis. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: Two authors independently screened the titles and abstracts, read the full text of the publications, extracted data, and assessed the risk of bias. MAIN RESULTS: We included 11 studies with a total of 596 participants. Two studies assessed fish oil versus olive oil or corn oil placebo. The following were all looked at in single studies: oral zinc sulphate compared to placebo, selenium versus selenium plus vitamin E versus placebo, vitamin D versus placebo, vitamin D versus vitamin E versus vitamins D plus vitamin E together versus placebo, pyridoxine versus placebo, sea buckthorn seed oil versus sea buckthorn pulp oil versus placebo, hempseed oil versus placebo, sunflower oil (linoleic acid) versus fish oil versus placebo, and DHA versus control (saturated fatty acids of the same energy value). Two small studies on fish oil suggest a possible modest benefit, but many outcomes were explored. A convincingly positive result from a much larger st

Background/Objectives: Chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC) is a common gastrointestinal disorder with a global prevalence of about 14%, common in women and elderly population. It often lacks effective treatment. This randomized clinical trial was aimed to evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of Hippophae rhamnoides L. (sea buckthorn) fruit extract in adults with CIC. Methods: A UHPLC-HRMS/MS analysis was performed on the hydroethanolic H. rhamnoides fruit extract to evaluate its composition. Ninety participants were randomly assigned to receive either 500 mg of H. rhamnoides extract or placebo delivered through a capsule daily for 28 days. The primary outcome was the change in weekly spontaneous complete bowel movements (SCBMs), while secondary outcomes included stool consistency (Bristol Stool Form Scale-BSFS), gastrointestinal symptoms, and quality of life (SF-12). Results: Metabolic profile of the extract tentatively identified 75 bioactive compounds, predominantly flavonoids, triterpenoids and phospholipids. H. rhamnoides fruit extract significantly improved SCBM frequency (from 1.5 to 2.6 per week; p < 0.001) and normalized stool consistency (mean BSFS score from 1.4 to 3.5; p < 0.001), compared to no change in the placebo group. Significant reductions in bloating, abdominal pain, and heaviness were observed, while flatulence showed no between-group significant difference. No adverse events or use of rescue treatments were reported. Quality-of-life scores remained largely unchanged, with a non-significant trend towards improved mental health in the treated group. Conclusions: These findings suggest that H. rhamnoides fruit extract is a safe and effective option for managing CIC, offering an alternative to other plant extracts with laxative effects.

Postmenopausal women are faced with difficulties in colposcopy, such as easy bleeding from epithelial atrophy, and thinning, atypical colposcopy images, unsatisfactory exposure, and decreased sensitivity of colposcopy. We aimed to improve the sensitivity and satisfaction of colposcopy in postmenopausal women and to evaluate the clinical efficacy of compound sea-buckthorn oil suppository on topical vaginal pretreatment in postmenopausal women prior to colposcopy. Postmenopausal patients who underwent colposcopy in the Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital of Fudan University from April 2023 to July 2024 were randomly assigned to three groups: (A) untreated control group, (B) compound sea-buckthorn oil suppository group, (C) estrogen ointment group. Group B and group C were treated for 2 weeks before colposcopy, and the colposcopy and adverse reactions were analyzed. A total of 377 patients were included in this study, of which 9 patients were excluded from the colposcopy results for failing to complete the 2-week medication, and 368 patients were included in the colposcopy results, including 125 patients in group A, 121 patients in group B, and 122 patients in group C. The high-risk HPV infection before colposcopy accounted for 94.3% (347/368), of which HPV16 and/or HPV18 infection accounted for 20.4% (75/368), and other types of infection accounted for 75.3% (277/368). The patients with abnormal cytology (ASCUS and above) accounted for 47.6% (175/368). No significant differences were observed in age, cytology before colposcopy, and HPV type among the three groups. There were 196 cases (53.3%) of abnormal pathologies in postoperative colposcopic biopsy, among which 42 cases were high-grade cervical squamous intraepithelial lesions. After 2 weeks of medication, the integrity of vaginal epithelium, the adequacy ratio of colposcopy, and the satisfaction rate of acetic acid test and iodine staining test in groups B and C were significantly improved compared with group A (P < 0.001), and there was no significant difference between groups B and C. The incidence of breast discomfort in the estrogen ointment group was 5.6%, while the incidence of dizziness and headache was

Burn injuries can be associated with the incidence of disability and death, yet their management remains a costly difficult problem. We conducted this clinical trial to evaluate the period of wound healing with sea buckthorn dressings for the second-degree burns and compare the results with 1% silver sulfadiazine (SSD) dressings. This randomized triple-blind clinical trial was conducted in a hospital in Isfahan, Iran. Fifty-five patients suffering second-degree burns were recruited through convenient sampling and randomly divided into two groups and treated with either sea buckthorn cream or 1% SSD. Wound dressings were done until complete wound healing was attained. The process of healing burns was monitored using the Bates-Jensen Wound Assessment Tool; complete healing was determined by using the standard burn healing checklist. It was deduced that the period of healing second-degree burns in the group treated with sea buckthorn cream was shorter than the group treated with 1% SSD (p < 0.001). The results demonstrated the greater clinical efficacy of sea buckthorn cream over 1% SSD for healing second-degree burns. It was concluded that using sea buckthorn dressing by reducing the period of wound healing can shorten the course of treatment of second-degree burns as well as reduce the burden of care in health care services. © 2021 The Wound Healing Society.

Original, chemically characterized Sea buckthorn (SBT) twig and leaf extracts were in vitro studied in terms of anti-Candida activity. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of the extracts against C. albicans ATCC 10231 ranged: 250 μg/ml (twig), 31.5 μg/ml (leaf), and against C. glabrata G1 (clinical isolate) - 15.6 μg/ml (twig), 3.9 μg/ml (leaf). Next the extracts have been used at their subMIC. Both extracts significantly enhanced activity of fluconazole (FLC) and caspofungin (CAS) against C. albicans and increased their efficacy against C. glabrata, measured by an agar dilution assay combined with the E-test. The extracts inhibited C. albicans morphogenesis such as germ tube and hyphae formation as well as invasion to the "Spider" Agar. Antiadhesive and anti-biofilm activities of the extracts were evaluated by Alamar Blue reduction assay. It showed not significant reduction in the degree of cell adhesion (by 10-15%) but noticeable decrease of biofilm formation (by 80% in the case of SBT-twig extract). In conclusion, this study provided the evidence that SBT extracts, used at non-cytotoxic concentrations for the fibroblasts (IC50 from 664.8 μg/ml to 1060.4 μg/ml), targeted some of Candida spp. virulence factors essential for the establishment of the infection. SBT twigs, previously regarded as waste material, were shown to be also a valuable source of the substances with promising antimicrobial activity.

Background and Objectives: Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory dermatosis with a complex pathophysiology that continues to challenge effective long-term disease management. Rosacea is characterized by immune dysregulation, oxidative stress, neurovascular dysfunction, and impaired epidermal barrier integrity, while current therapeutic options remain limited. Hippophae rhamnoides (sea buckthorn) is a phytochemically rich medicinal plant with reported anti-inflammatory and dermo-reparative properties. Materials and Methods: A systematic literature review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines using the PubMed database. Studies published from 2020 onward evaluating sea buckthorn extracts, oils, or isolate bioactive compounds in the in vitro, in vivo, and limited clinical contexts were included, with emphasis on rosacea relevant mechanisms. Results: Twenty-six studies show that sea buckthorn compounds modulate inflammation, oxidative stress, vascular and immune responses, and barrier function in preclinical models. They consistently reduce pro-inflammatory mediators, improve barrier integrity, and attenuate immune or vascular activation, suggesting potential benefits for inflammatory skin disorders such as rosacea. Conclusions: Hippophae rhamnoides shows promising anti-inflammatory and skin-repairing effects that may benefit patients with rosacea. However, most evidence comes from preclinical studies, and clinical data specifically for rosacea are limited. Well-designed clinical trials are needed to confirm its effectiveness in treating this condition.

Bioinformatics has emerged as a valuable tool for screening drugs and understanding their effects. This systematic review aimed to evaluate whether in silico studies using anti-obesity peptides targeting therapeutic pathways for obesity, when subsequently evaluated in vitro and in vivo, demonstrated effects consistent with those predicted in the computational analysis. The review was framed by the question: "What peptides or proteins have been used to treat obesity in in silico studies?" and structured according to the acronym PECo. The systematic review protocol was developed and registered in PROSPERO (CRD42022355540) in accordance with the PRISMA-P, and all stages of the review adhered to these guidelines. Studies were sourced from the following databases: PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, Web of Science, Virtual Heath Library, and EMBASE. The search strategies resulted in 1015 articles, of which, based on the exclusion and inclusion criteria, 7 were included in this systematic review. The anti-obesity peptides identified originated from various sources including bovine alpha-lactalbumin from cocoa seed (Theobroma cacao L.), chia seed (Salvia hispanica L.), rice bran (Oryza sativa), sesame (Sesamum indicum L.), sea buckthorn seed flour (Hippophae rhamnoides), and adzuki beans (Vigna angularis). All articles underwent in vitro and in vivo reassessment and used molecular docking methodology in their in silico studies. Among the studies included in the review, 46.15% were classified as having an "uncertain risk of bias" in six of the thirteen criteria evaluated. The primary target investigated was pancreatic lipase (n = 5), with all peptides targeting this enzyme demonstrating inhibition, a finding supported both in vitro and in vivo. Additionally, other peptides were identified as PPARγ and PPARα agonists (n = 2). Notably, all peptides exhibited different mechanisms of action in lipid metabolism and adipogenesis. The findings of this systematic review underscore the effectiveness of computational simulation as a screening tool, providing crucial insights and guiding in vitro and in vivo investigations for the discovery of novel anti-obesity peptides.
